The zoo is open every day of the year except December 25. Zoo grounds are open from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily, except in winter when the zoo closes at 5:00 p.m.

Can I have a birthday party at the zoo?
Celebrate your child's birthday party at the National Zoo and support the Zoo's conservation and education efforts. Your child and your child's friends will have an unforgettable day as they put on their safari hats and join our expert tour guides to explore the Zoo! Birthday parties are two hours long and are for children ages four to eight. Birthday parties are very popular, and dates often book up several months in advance.
What animals will I see at the zoo?
The zoo's most famous residents are, of course, the Giant Pandas. However, you will be able to see many more animals during your visit - nearly 1,800 to be exact! Great apes including six Western Lowland Gorillas call the zoo home, as well as big cats like Sumatran tigers and African lions. Six Asian elephants are waiting to greet you, along with a variety of exotic birds, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals.
